LOST PHOTOS CAN BE MORE THAN JUST A MEMORY

Whoops!  You’ve pressed the wrong button and accidentally deleted all your photos from your PC.  So, apart from banging your fists on the desk and tearing out your hair…now what?

The first step is to take a deep breath and relax.  It’s not all doom and gloom.  There’s every reason to believe that you’ll get all your photos back intact unless the actual device that they were being stored on has been physically damaged in any way.   In fact, recovering digital photos from CDs, memory cards, digital cameras etc is one of the most common reasons for data recovery. When a photo is deleted from a memory card, it’s actually only the link that is taken away, so the actual data still remains – making data recovery possible.

Photo files can be ‘lost’ in several ways including accidental deletion, accidental formatting of the memory card and corruption of the device.  It doesn’t matter what caused the losses (unless it is physical damage or the devices have been overwritten), recovering deleted photos can be done quickly and easily.

OK, so you’ve avoided going into cardiac arrest from the shock – what’s the next step to take?  Don’t do anything if your images were stored on a rewriteable format ie memory card, CD etc. That means don’t write any more data onto that device.  The best thing to do is to take out the device (from the camera, hard drive etc) and store it somewhere safe.  You won’t be able to recover your images if the device has been overwritten.

There are many different photo recovery tools available as well as tools for general data recovery – and not all of them use the same techniques.  The internet is a good source of information as to the many different specialized software options available for data recovery.  If you’re unsure, it’s advisable to call a reputable online computer repairs company for their help with your data recovery.

To prevent possible disaster in the future, remember to:

·         Always copy your photos onto two separate formats, eg CD or DVD

·         Only burn a CD once – burning multiple sessions can lead to problems

·         If you’re storing valuable data, remember that rewritable CD-RW media can be corrupted easily by a software crash, so it’s best to use other formats

The loss of precious photos is devastating.  Making multiple copies is the first thing to do to prevent it from happening.  The second thing is to remember not to overwrite the format, but to get help quickly.  In theory, it’s a quick and easy process to recover lost data, Perth computer repair experts say, but it’s always worth making absolutely sure by calling in the professionals.  The first mistake was ‘losing’ the data – you won’t want to make another one trying to bring those precious memories back!
