The Dangers Of Keeping Data On Memory Cards

Last week I found out for myself how unwise it is to keep photos stored on memory cards. I must admit that this was something that somebody had warned me about before but I chose to ignore the advice. I paid for it big time because last week my memory card became corrupted and I have now lost over a thousand photos. The worst thing is that I know a few people who are really knowledgeable in this type of technology and they have all said that there is no way for me to get my photos back.

I have found this whole experience really upsetting and the fact that it was all my fault entirely just makes things a whole lot worse. Within that collection of 1000+ photos are about four years of memories; birthday parties, four foreign holidays, and trips around the UK. In fact I had photographs of the best holiday we had ever had in Florida, USA, stored on the memory card. Even though I was planning to print those photos out, I was waiting and waiting and never did it. One of the worst things of all is the fact that photos of my children growing up are gone now forever. My wife is furious with me as she was always on my case to have these pictures printed off; I kept procrastinating.

I would urge everybody to not leave their photos on memory cards. It is possible that these devices can malfunction. One of my friends works with things like this and he told me that it is only a matter of time before a memory card becomes corrupt. He has suggested that the photos are transferred to a computer straight away and that they are then backed up somewhere else too. I have learnt my lesson the hard way, and will never again use a memory card to store photos long term. I just feel that I paid too high a price in order for me to learn this lesson.

Memory Cards are items found in a lot of things in today’s day and age. R4 cards can give you a great example of a memory card. Yet another that you can find widely available is the R4i.
