The key reason men and women fail to succeed at operating remotely is they fail to recognise the neccesity of excellent organisation and sustainable self management.

I have been operating remotely for almost a decade since I first discovered Quickbooks online an ‘on demand’ small business accounting software service and was mesmerised by the fact that if you can do accounting online then why shouldn’t it be practical to perform other key types of of work at a distance?

Whilst working remotely has significant advantages there are numerous mistakes that people make which convert into issues that result in reduced work output and reduced morale. The key reason for low productivity in remote professionals is distraction and it is a established and well known fact that it can take a professional up to 20 mins to return to their original output level after experiencing a disruption.

Deeper insights reveal that persons who are consistently subjected to disruptions are more likely to suffer from lower memory power and are prone to developing mental health trouble in old age. We exist in an over communicated era and it is critical that you know the problems this causes before you decide to work remotely. When operating remotely you have to do everything feasible to eradicate the threat of being interrupted.

Here are my most important tips:

1, Get a habit, communicate it to absolutely everyone and stick to it!

Good examples are a fixed time of day when you check or compose and reply to mail and make or be available for phone calls. Before I began working remotely I used to get as many as a couple of hundred electronic mails every 24 hours. Now I think I am unfortunate if I receive greater than four. To ’reset’ my electronic mail experience I modified my e-mail address and vigorously took steps to look after the details being passed on to anyone. I then ‘trained’ everybody who I gave my e-mail address to, to use it with special care. I also set up an automatic reply that swiftly told anyone sending me mail my routine for reading mail and if something should have my urgent awareness to mark it as ‘Urgent’.

2. Get rid of alerts.

Disable every function that can send you a perceptible alert. This includes mobile and
conventional handsets and forms of alerts from e-mail such as visual alerts, audible warnings, screen changes to your inbox folder and of course facing a window. Get a door on your work place and put up a ‘do not disturb’ sign on it.

In ‘Remote Working Part 3 – Best online software’ I will reveal my favourite tools and software.

Obviously not all of us can work remotely as lots of careers require employees to consistently attend their office or travel to undertake their work face to face. But for those of us who can or want to work remotely then I thought it would be useful to share my experiences and offer some practical advice by writing and publishing it on the net in the hope that I could give others valuable advice for adapting to remote working or supervising remote workers.

I can tell you that there are a lot of so called ’experts’ out there who will try and make you purchase e-books for enormous sums of money, believe me you don’t need to do this.

I am lucky enough to be able to work anywhere I choose and just about everyone who asks me what I do for a living wants to understand how I am able to work remotely. Don’t be fooled here I am still perfecting the art of remote working as each day I encounter persons on the Internet who show me new ways and I am always coming across new technologies and processes that make my life simpler and make me more efficient.

Over the past 7 years I have steadily adapted my working processes to let me to do all of my work remotely with a kit of online tools and unfaltering self discipline. One lunchtime whilst searching the net I uncovered Quickbooks online and this brought to my attention what just might be possible. The encounter with online ‘on demand’ small business accounting software was the turning point for me and the beginning of my ‘remote working experience.

I have to tell you up front that effectively working remotely is as much about the software as it is about self discipline. Working remotely also means imparting to your colleagues, supervisors and customers as to what they can expect and how they will stay in touch with you.

In ‘Remote Working Part 2 – Self discipline essentials’ I discuss how to focus.

The key reason workers fail to succeed at working remotely is they fail to recognise the need for high-quality organisation and solid self management.

Whilst working remotely has substantial gains there are numerous traps that people easily fall into which turn into problems that cause reduced work output and reduced morale. The top reason for reductions in productivity in remote professionals is interruption and it is a confirmed and well known fact that it can take a person up to twenty minutes to return to their original productivity level after experiencing a distraction.

Studies also show that persons who are regularly experience interruptions are more likely to be susceptible to lower memory ability and are prone to developing mental health trouble in old age. We live in an over communicated time and it is essential that you are aware of the problems this causes before you decide to work remotely. Whilst operating remotely you should do everything feasible to eradicate the jeopardy of being disturbed.

Here are things that really do work:

1, Get a habit, communicate it to absolutely everyone and rigidly adhere to it!

Good examples are a consistent time of day when you review or write and send electronic mail and make or will accept telephone calls. Before I began working remotely I used to get nearly 200 electronic mails every 24 hours. Now I think I am unfortunate if I receive greater than four. To ’reset’ my e-mail experience I modified my e-mail address and tenaciously took steps to protect the details being made available to anyone. I then made sure every individual who I gave my e-mail address to, to use it with special care. I also created an automatic reply that swiftly told anyone sending me mail my schedule for attending to mail and if an e-mail needed my immediate awareness to mark it as ‘Urgent’.

2. Get rid of alerts.

Disable every possible mechanism that can send you a interruption. This includes portable and
conventional phones and types of alerts from e-mail such as visual alerts, audible warnings, screen changes to your inbox folder and of course facing a window. Get a door on your work place and put up a ‘do not disturb’ sign on it.

Obviously not everybody can work remotely as many types of employment require people to consistently attend their employers premises or travel to undertake their tasks in person. But for those of us who can or want to work remotely then I thought it would be useful to share what I have learned and give some practical directions by putting it on the net with the sole objective of providing useful timesavers for adapting to remote working or supervising remote workers.

I must tell you you that there are a substantial number of so called ’experts’ on the Internet who will try and get you to buy e-books for substantial sums of money, believe me you don’t have to do this.

Don’t be fooled here I am still developing the science of remote working as everyday I discover people on the web who tell me about new knowledge and I am repeatedly finding new technologies and ways that make my life easier and improve my productivity.

During the past 7 years I have steadily adapted my working processes to allow me to do just about all of my work remotely with a mixture of online tools and robust self discipline. One early morning whilst browsing the Internet I discovered Quickbooks online and this opened my eyes to what just might be possible.
I must mention up front that successfully working remotely is as much about the systems as it is about self discipline. Working remotely also means stating to your team members, managers and clients as to what they can expect and how they will interact with you.
