Dedicated IPs and Name Based Hosting
Explaining each term connected with web hosting one by one can make it much easier to understand the general functioning of a web hosting server. To fully explain the function of a dedicated IP, we will have to look not only at the very definition of it, but also at other similar web hosting solutions. Therefore we should consider not only dedicated IPs, but also the Name Base Hosting.
Dedicated IP is when one IP address is used for each virtual host. With Name Based hosting there may be various hostsnames on one server with a single IP address. In other words, a dedicated IP is assigned to one website and its server. The Name Based option, on the other hand, gives you only one IP address which works for multiple sites though.
When using dedicated IPs the web server software uses the IP address to connect a client with the website rather than the domain name. A server is basically a computer with an operating system that cooperates with the internet. It communicates with web applications, e.g. browsers, to make sure that the right page is shown. Before launching into the purpose of the dedicated IPs we must first understand servers.
A web browser is built to interpret code. It sends requests for pages to a server via bandwidth. The server then finds the matching code and sends the correct page to the browser window. Finally, the information is seen in form of text and images. What is exchanged between the server and a browser is the IP address or Name Based URL.
The dedicated IPs use the numerical code that makes up the IP address. This eight to nine numerical code determines what the user will see when downloading a page. The primary purpose of dedicated IP is to use it with SSL certificates rather than a shared certificate.
SSL stands for secure sockets layer and more recently transport layer security. The SSL certificate enables better security on hosting servers. The information sent with it is protected from hackers and other users. The certificate will encrypt data the user of the page provides in an online form. The form is then sent to you via the browser- server connection. Once you have received it, you may unlock it and check its content. It may be for a newsletter, credit card payment, or other secure information.
The SSL certificate ensures you and the originating party are the only two individuals to see the data. With a shared certificate there is a possibility of third parties seeing the information as well. You rather won’t need dedicated IPs for shared certificates, as they already have the Name Based system. If you are going to run an e-commerce site with any online forms or payment options you will need a dedicated IP through your vps provider. Without a dedicated server and IP address the SSL certificate will have difficulty working.
