Shared Web Hosting and its Pitfalls

A stable, well managed website is the goal that most site owners have for their work. But bearing this in mind, the one overriding factor that everybody goes through when wanting to get their sites hosted is the cost involved. Not everybody is able to bear the burdens of not only high web design prices, but high hosting prices as well.

Cost therefore, plays a crucial role as many people decide to go with shared web hosting and not dedicated web hosting. When compared to free web hosting, shared web hosting is a great alternative, while still being fairly cheap. And because it is a cheap form of hosting, it doesn’t come without its pitfalls and disadvantages. Some of these disadvantages have the capability of hindering your sites growth in the future. Some of the drawbacks are pointed out below.

The first issue to bear in mind is that of reliability. Web hosting that is shared is not always considered reliable. The reason for this is that hundreds or even thousands of websites are hosted on the same server, using this one server’s resources. Therefore, reliability is affected for this reason of sharing resources.
You also have to think about issues with upgrading. Will you be guaranteed to get what you intend paying for if you upgrade from either free to shared, or shared to dedicated? Are there any guarantees about this?

Another thing to look out for would be web host providers pertaining to offer an x amount of add-on domains. While most shared we hosting services do indeed deliver on all their promises, some of the smaller ones do not, or cannot. Technical support can also be an issue with some hosts. Or in other words, the lack of any technical support. Most shared web hosts have great tech support, but again, some don’t.
